Big names breeze into the second round at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open – Tennis News
With the exception of fifth seed Sabine Lisicki, all seeds advanced into the round of 16 at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open 2012, a WTA International level tournament held in Luxembourg City.
Top seed, Roberta Vinci, overpowered Olga Govortsova in a topsy-turvy three-setter in one hour and 22 minutes. After pulling out the opener with a bagel, the Italian star stepped off steam and lost the second set. However, she went berserk again in the deciding
set and carved out the victory with double bagels.
Vinci was quoted in a post match press conference:
"After the first set I had a lot of chances in the first few games of the second set but she won them, then she started to play better and I went a little bit down. But in the third set I focused again on being aggressive and just playing my game – a lot
of slice, coming to net. That’s how I love to play."
Seeded second in this event, Julia Goerges from Germany also stole the show. She was underplayed against Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa few weeks ago in Seoul. However, the gorgeous German unveiled her true colours and crippled the Spaniard with a breadstick
in just under an hour.
Goerges commented in a post match press conference:
"I’m always happy to come back and finish the season here in Luxembourg. I just have good memories here – in the last two years I’ve reached a final and a semifinal – and it kind of feels like I’m back at home in Germany, with all of the television channels
and people here."
The fifth seed, Sabine Lisicki, faced a different fortune later that day. She was edged out by the Belgian qualifier, Kirsten Flipkens, in gruelling three sets in one hour and 49 minutes.
