The Pakistan People’s Party lawyers and Asma Jahangir have done it again as the group secured their third straight victory with Mian Israr-ul-Haq being elected as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association on November 1, 2012.

Polling took place throughout the country as candidates did their best to woo around 2,500 voters of the Supreme Court. There were reported to be 57 candidates for 21 posts and various positions, but it was Mian Israr-ul-Haq of the People’s Lawyers Forum who took the most votes to become President for the next year.

This year’s seat of the President of the highest Bar Association in the country was set for a candidate from Punjab, which has Awais Ahmed, Mian Israr-ul-Haq and Barrister Zafarullah Khan in the race. Awais Ahmed was being backed by various lawyer groups; with the most prominent being Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s Hamid Khan and the Professional Group of Lawyers.

It was certainly a dashing victory for the candidate as he won with a lead of 287 votes, after polling concluded in the wee hours of the night in stations around the major cities of Pakistan from Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Abbotabad, Karachi, Quetta and Hyderabad.

President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf were also reported to have congratulated the winner and expressed their satisfaction in seeing how the lawyers also showed their support for their candidate.

Mian Israr-ul-Haq comes after Asma Jahangir and outgoing president, Yasin Azad.
