Powerful blast kills two officials in Karachi

At least two personnel of Rangers lost their lives when an explosive-laden vehicle went off outside the Sachal Rangers Headquarters in North Nazimabad Block B area of Karachi, early on Thursday.

Apart from two causalities over 10 people sustained injuries in the incident, officials said. IG Sindh Fayyaz Leghari said that this was a suicide blast, but further details were not available so far.

According to DIG East, at least 100 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast. He added that a mini truck had been used to deliver the explosives.

The powerful explosion destroyed the vehicle and severely damaged the building’s two storied structure, a section of which has collapsed. Parts of the building had caught fire, which the fire brigade put out.

According to the reports, the dead and injured people have been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed hospital.

An eye-witness while speaking to the media said that most of those injured were seriously injured and are being given medical treatment. He added that doctors had removed ball bearings in addition metal fragments from some of the injured.

One of the injured Rangers’ personnel Mohammad Farooq narrated that the security personnel had just sat down after offering their morning prayers at around 6:30 am when the explosion took place.

Another Rangers’ personnel Anwar said that he was coming for his duty when he saw a car barge through the gates, after which it hit a tree and exploded. Emergency services have reached the spot and are conducting a rescue operation.

A suspicious person was also reportedly arrested from the immediate vicinity of the Rangers headquarters soon after the blast. The area has been cordoned off by security officials.

The blast was powerful enough to be heard for miles around and a big mushroom cloud rose high into the sky. Reports say that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed the responsibility of the incident.
