Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf vows to hold free‚ fair and impartial elections

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Tuesday reiterated government’s resolve to hold free‚ fair and impartial elections in the country on time, adding that the upcoming polls will further strengthen the democracy in the country.

 

Talking to Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan‚ the premier expressed the confidence that the general elections will further strengthen the democratic process by streamlining the role of state institutions in the polity.

 

He applauded Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for completing all arrangements for holding the General Elections in the country. He also appreciated the decision of the Election Commission to ban display of weapons during elections.

 

Raja Pervez Ashraf assured the Secretary ECP that the government will extend all administrative and logistical support to ECP in order to ensure maximum participation and voter turnout.

 

The Secretary Election Commission informed the Prime Minister that a code of conduct has also been prepared by the Election Commission of Pakistan which prohibits display of weapons during election campaign.

 

The Secretary Election Commission also briefed the Prime Minister that candidates will have to specify the venues of their public meetings and the Election Commission will permit them to hold meetings in consultation with the local administration. Similarly‚ rallies and processions brought out by candidates will have to follow specified routes approved by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

 

Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan informed the Prime Minister that the Election Commission will soon hold meetings with the Federal and Provincial Governments to ensure that the law and order is maintained during polling.

 

In the meantime, Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim expressed concern over the issue of Karachi’s unverified electoral rolls. While heading a meeting in the ECP, he said voter lists had been prepared with the utmost care and any mistakes in the lists would soon be rectified.

 

The commission would implement all orders issued by the Supreme Court. Moreover, the meeting was briefed that installing CCTV cameras in every polling station was not practically possible; adding that, funds amounting to 75 billion rupees would be required for that purpose.
