Afghanistan presses Pakistan for Taliban release

In a bid to kickstart peace efforts in the region, Afghanistan has pressed Islamabad for the release of Taliban prisoners. Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabani Khar met her Afghan counterpart Zalmai Rassoul and the release of Taliban prisoners in Pakistan was discussed.

 

The two agreed to increase cooperation in order to deal with terrorism and other mutual challenges faced by the two countries.

 

Following the meeting, the foreign ministers held a news conference and announced that a joint commission had been set up to operationalize and consider Taliban release and the draft of the Pakistan-Afghanistan strategic agreement was ready and would be signed soon.

 

Pakistan also announced its support for the Ulema conference scheduled for January 2013 in Kabul. Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said that Pakistan is keen to strengthen its ties with Afghanistan and it also supports the peace process in the neighboring country.

 

Khar informed the media that a delegation of Afghan Peace Council visited Pakistan few days ago and their trip went successful. She said that she herself visited Afghanistan four times and the Afghan Foreign Minister arrived in Islamabad on the country’s invitation.

 

She said that both the neighbouring countries are facing same challenges of terrorism, drugs. On the occasion, the Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul said that his country would not allow its soil to be used against Pakistan. He said that the two countries discussed Afghan peace process during their talks.

 

He said dialogue must continue for the peace process to succeed. He said we want stronger relations with Pakistan. Afghan Foreign Minister said both countries need to enhance bilateral trust.
