Bradley Wiggins overcame Mo Farah and Andy Murray

The 2012 season has definitely been too kind on Bradley Wiggins, collecting victories with both hands, or both legs as one must say.

The racing season is already finished but the cyclist is not finished winning and is fully occupied receiving different awards for his achievements.

His 2012 highlights include an overall victory at the Tour de France 2012, becoming the first ever British cyclist to occupy the top overall spot at the most prestigious cycling event of the year.

His most recent achievement of the 2012 season was when the Journalists’ Association named him as the British Sportsman of the Year 2012.

A total number of 750 sports journalists were chosen from across the country as they voted in favour of Wiggins after his marvellous performances throughout the season.

The 32-year-old became the fifth cyclist to receive the award after Reg Harris (1950), Tommy Simpson (1965), Chris Hoy (2008) and Mark Cavendish (2011).

However, Christ Hoy, Tommy Simpson and Mark Cavendish also hold the honour of winning the BBC’s prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award as well and Bradley is a hot favourite to enter that esteemed group by winning the BBC award this year.

Both Hoy and Wiggins have already been nominated for the award and are awaiting results on December 16thas the results will be announced in front of a fully packed expected crowd of 15,000 in ExCel centre London.

President of British Cycling Brian Cookson was delighted to have his best cyclists included in the category.

“Bradley Wiggins, our first winner of the Tour de France, Sir Chris Hoy, now Britain’s most successful Olympian,” he noted.

“And Sarah Storey – whose 11 Paralympic golds match Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson’s record – all thoroughly deserve their place on the shortlist,” Cookson added.

“This comes a year after Mark Cavendish won the award and if a cyclist can do it again, it will further highlight just how mainstream our sport now is” he concluded.

It will be interesting to see if Wiggins manages to overcome Sir Chris Hoy and claims the BBC Prestigious Sports Personality of the year award.
