Indian army responsible for cross-border attack: Indian Media

Indian media Thursday stated Pakistan’s attack on Indian army was a reprisal to latter’s Sunday assault on farmer’s post.

The reports citing sources in New Delhi’s ministries of internal and defence affairs held Indian soldiers responsible for escalation of tensions between the two countries. The reports said that commandos from 9th Maratha Light Infantry caused provocation by launching attack on Pakistani position.

Report quoting sources in both the ministries said Islamabad attack was a response to Indian assault. The reports claimed that Brigadier Gulab Singh Rawat deputed at Charchanda Sector along the Line of Control (LOC) decided to launch aggressive attack that led to killing of Pakistani soldiers, including a commissioned officer.

A report pointed out that Brigadier Singh was an aggressive officer and his behavior affected nine-year old ceasefire agreement between both the countries.

The Indian army has ordered an investigation into the matter and a decision was likely against Brigadier Singh, the India media reports said.

On January 8, India claimed that firing across the LoC by Pakistani soldiers had killed two of its troops, with the spokesman for the Indian Army’s Northern Control stating this was a violation of the ceasefire agreed on by the two sides.

Pakistan has denied being involved in any incident of unprovoked firing, but cites an incident on January 6, when it says Indian troops attacked a base and killed one of its soldiers. In turn, India denies this and says its positions had been bombarded for five hours by Pakistan.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.
