Baldia factory case won’t be dropped

State Minister for Finance Salim Mandviwala backtracked on his remarks over a case into the Baldia Town garments factory fire where 250 people lost their lives, shortly after TV channels broadcast his statement.

He had said that the prime minister had withdrawn murder case against the factory owners over the directives.

The state minister issued an explanation after Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad contacted President Asif Ali Zardari and the prime minister, requesting them to ensure that all the requisites of justice were met during the investigation.

The contacts made by the governor prompted the minister to come up with a statement that the case would not be dropped against the factory owners and investigation would be carried out on merit.

Earlier, Minister of State for Finance, Salim Mandviwala Wednesday disclosed that the case registered against the owners of Baldia Town factory has been withdrawn.

Talking to media men in Karachi, the State Minister said that the above case was withdrawn on the orders of Prime Minister.

He said Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf had promised the office bearers of Karachi Chamber of Commerce (KCCI) to have the case withdrawn during his visit to the chamber.

It is pertinent to mention here that more than 250 employees were charred to death following the eruption of fire into the Baldia Town factory, dubbed as the worst fire incident in Pakistan’s history.
