Benoit Paire and Gael Monfils advance; Paul-Henri Mathieu exits from Montpellier – Open Sud de France 2013
Eighth seeded Benoit Paire and Gael Monfils progressed into the second round at the Open Sud de France 2013, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Vina Del Mar, Chile. Paul-Henri Mathieu on the other suffered a brutal fate and exited by Sergiy Stakhovsky.
The French star, Paire devastated the Spanish challenger, Adrian Menendez-MacEiras, with a bagel at this indoor hard court event taking place at their home soil. He recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the world number 207 in 44 minutes. Paire was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed half of the 10 break chances to steal the spotlight.
He will next face off his compatriot, Richard Gasquet, whom he has a 4-3 lead in their FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series.
The former world number seven, Monfils required almost one and a half hour to outclass Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans. He brushed off all three breakpoints he came across and required a single break of serve in each set to record a 7-5, 6-4 win. Monfils fired 10 aces and spilled fewer unforced errors to progress.
The ninth seed, Mathieu faced a different fate later that day. He bowed out to Stakhovsky in brutal straight sets in one hour and 17 minutes.
The former world number 12 cashed two out of five break chances but was broken four times, eventually suffered a 4-6, 4-6 loss.
The local qualifier, Florent Serra, also saw the exit doors. He endured a 3-6, 2-6 loss at the hands of the Finn star, Jarkko Nieminen, in almost an hour-long marathon.
Nieminen will face off Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.
