U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has said the United States looks forward to timely, free, and fair elections that will result in the first civilian democratic transition in Pakistan’s history.

Senator Menendez wrapped up his three-day visit to Pakistan on Friday, the U.S. embassy said.

Throughout his visit, Senator Menendez reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to work with Pakistan to fight terrorism, support a stable and secure Afghanistan, increase economic opportunity, and strengthen civilian democracy, tolerance, pluralism, and civil society.

Senator Menendez had the opportunity to visit Mangla Dam, and to review firsthand the contributions U.S. assistance funds are making to help alleviate Pakistan’s energy crisis.

Senator Menendez stated that, “The American people are proud to support large-scale energy projects here in Pakistan that will add 900 megawatts of power to the national grid by the end of this year, enough power to supply electricity to more than two million households across the country.”

The Senator held consultations with U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson and members of his team, and attended U.S. Mission Pakistan National Day celebrations in Islamabad and Lahore.

While in Pakistan, Senator Menendez met with President Asif Ali Zardari, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Senator Menendez also met with Mian Nawaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, and several representatives of civil society and the human rights community.
