Lee Chong Wei surges into Men’s Singles quarter-final at All England Open Badminton Championships

Malaysia’s top shuttler Lee Chong Wei finally got a good rhythm and advanced into Men’s Singles quarter-final after defeating China’s Wang Zhengming in rounf-of-16 clash at Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships 2013 in Birmingham, on Thursday, March 7.

The World Number One Chong Wei, who is also top seed in All England Open, was not at his best in this contest but he found his rhythm back timely and managed to show exit to his young Chinese opponent in 42 minutes.

Chong Wei found a quivering start in the opening stage of the match but he recovered in time and remained successful in winning this battle in straight games with a decent margin of 21-17 and 21-19.

The un-seeded Zhengming, on the contrary, played with great precision in the starting set but failed to maintain his upper hand as his top seeded challenger elevated his level of play.

Chinese man stayed close all the way but failed to dominate the pace in ending points and eventually lost the match with a respectable total on the board.

In the opening set of the match, Chong Wei could not dominate the pace of rallies as he was a bit slow giving a chance to Zhengming to dictate the terms.

Chinese shuttler played with greater level of precision and pushed Chong Wei in all areas of the court. He produced impressive smashes from the rear court area and took a comfortable lead until the break.

After the mid-game interval, top seeded Chong Wei increased his speed in all areas of the court and remained successful in ending up the deficit.

Malaysian man continued playing attacking and positive badminton in the concluding half and managed to bag the first set with a four-point advantage of 21-17.

In the second game, Chong Wei did not let his Chinese opponent to dominate the pace and remained slightly ahead on score board all the way until the end of opening half.

After the break, Zhengming tried to push Chong Wei on back foot by playing attacking badminton but failed to break the impressive defence of the World Number One.

Chong Wei, meanwhile, remained composed and collected in the arena and managed to secure the second game with a close margin of 21-19.

In the quarter-final clash, Chong Wei will take on Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh who had to work hard to get rid of India’s qualifier Sourabh Verma in the other pre-quarter-final contest.
