Five foreign troops die in Afghan helicopter crash

Five foreign troops have been killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force said on Tuesday.

 

The cause of the crash is under investigation, however initial reporting indicates there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the incident, the ISAF said in a statement.

 

Meanwhile ISAF Taliban said Tuesday they fired long-range missiles on the US-controlled Bagram prison.

 

Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said in a statement that all missiles hit targets. He however did not say about casualties. The US has not commented on the claim.

 

The ISAF in another statement said that an Afghan and coalition security force have killed Taliban leader, Hamza, during an operation in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province.

 

Hamza was responsible for coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Khugyani district, it said. He specialized in improvised explosive device attacks, and also had a history of involvement in small arms and suicide attacks.

 

The security force positively identified Hamza engaging in insurgent activity and engaged the armed insurgent, killing him.

 

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the death of a Taliban leader, Idris Kaka, during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, Saturday. Idris Kaka was responsible for directing improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, the statement said.

 

He also had a history of kidnappings against the Afghan population. During the operation, the security force positively identified Idris Kaka and his associates conducting insurgent activity. The force engaged the insurgents, killing three.

 

Afghan and coalition security forces confirmed today the arrest of a Taliban leader during an operation in Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday. The insurgent is accused of directing insurgent activity in Baraki Barak district. He is also an influential figure in the Taliban network there, ordering improvised explosive device operations in addition to direct and indirect fire attacks.
