Afghan Taliban have killed their own commander who had joined the government in southern province, media reported on Wednesday.

The local police commander, Mullah Zainuddin known as Mullah Zaino, was killed and his two guards injured in a mine explosion in Panjwai District of Kandahar Province,  the Afghan Islamic Press reported.

The head of Panjwai District, Fazal Mohammad Ishaqzai, was quoted as saying that the mine targeting the vehicle of Mullah Zainuddin exploded in the Sparwan area of this district Tuesday, and Mullah Zaino was killed and his two guards injured as a result.

He added that a remote controlled mine targeted the vehicle of Mullah Zainuddin when he was travelling along with other vehicles of his nephew’s wedding procession. He added that the vehicle of Mullah Zainuddin was destroyed in the blast as well.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for killing Mullah Zaino and their spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yusof Ahmadi, said that five police, including Mullah Zaino, were killed and four others injured.

He had parted ways with the Taliban and joined the government. He was made police commander in Panjwai District around two years ago.

Meanwhile the ISAF said Wednesday that an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani facilitator and one other insurgent during operations in Tanai district, Khost province.

The insurgent is suspected to be responsible for multiple attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He is also believed to be involved in procurement and distribution of improvised explosive devices and other weapons to militant fighters throughout Khost and Paktiya provinces, an ISAF statement said.

The security force also seized seven AK-47s, four AK-47 magazines, 2 handguns, 75 rounds of ammunition and IED-making material as a result of the operation.
