PPP has three days but no consensus on caretaker PM yet

Hostilities in Pakistani politics are so deep that political leaders do not accommodate opinion of rivals even if they come up with recommendation in line with the constitution.

The opposition Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) last week proposed three names for the caretaker Prime Minister, however, Information Minister Qamar-uz-Zaman Kaira laughed at the names.

The PML-N had proposed names of two former Supreme Court judges – Justice (Retd.) Shakirullah Jan and Justice (Retd.) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Sindhi nationalist leader Rasool Bux Palejo.

The opposition has the right to propose names under the constitutional provisions and if the government disagrees the issue will be referred to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Prime Minister, Raja Pervez Ashraf had sent letter to opposition leader Chuadhry Nisar Ali Khan to propose names and he did.

Almost all other opposition parties supported the PML-N names but Mr Kaira raised objections and preferred to go public on the issue. There was no need of Kaira’s assertions but the ministers unfortunately play with the media and spoil political environment.

Chief Election Commissioner, Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, had earlier stated that he hopes the issue of caretaker PM will not be referred to him. He was right to say but who will convince the PPP to show courage of addressing to the opposition’s views.

The federal gov’t daily claims it has adopted the policy of consensus and reconciliation but in many cases it violated its own announcements.

The nation will see what the PPP decides before the March 16 dissolution of assemblies. The people would expect the PPP must do something positive in the couple of days.

The ANP-led government in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa was successful to reach understanding with the opposition on a consensus name for the caretaker Chief Minister.
