Prime Minister proposes 3 names for caretaker PM

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has suggested three names for the caretaker Prime Minister in response to a letter of Opposition leader in the National Assembly, spokesman for the PM office said on Thursday.

The prime minister in his letter proposed three names of former Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh, former State Bank Governor Dr Ishrat Husain and Justice (retd) Hazar Khan Khoso of the Supreme Court.

The opposition leader had already nominated the names of Justice (retd) Shakirullah Jan, Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bux Palejo for caretaker PM post.

The assemblies will be dissolved on March 16 and a caretaker govt will be established to supervise elections in two months.

New elections will be held in two months time after the day of the dissolution of the assemblies. A caretaker government will hold the elections.

The Prime Minister said in a letter to the opposition leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan that the three persons he has suggested are of known standing, integrity and competence.

Consultations on the name of caretaker Prime Minister is constitutional requirements.

The Prime Minister invited the opposition for talks to reach consensus.

“We can discuss and deliberate on the names put forward both by the government and the opposition at a mutually convenient time so that we can agree on a suitable person in line with the constitutional obligations,” Raja Pervez Asharf said.

He hoped for an early response from the opposition to put a closure to the issue and move forward to set the stage for holding general elections in the country.

“Let me reiterate that we have pursued a policy of reconciliation and consensus in the country for the well being and betterment of the people of Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said.

He said he has held in-depth consultations with his allies as well as within the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party in keeping with the same spirit on the proposed names.
