The St. Louis Cardinals senior management is trying hard to convince their starting pitcher Adam Wainwright’s agent for a possible extension on his current contract.

“We want to get something done before spring training ends, and that’s our goal, they have communicated clearly that they want to keep Adam here, and we’ve communicated that he wants to be here. We have to keep working on that,” Agent Steve Hammond said after meeting for several hours with the Cardinals brass who tried to convince him for Wainwright’s extension.

The Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak recently discussed with Wainwright’s agent Hammond for several hours and talked on several things including potential extension.

“It’s just a commitment to continue to work and both sides are working hard to make that happen,” Hammond said with quite detail. “Both sides have to do what they think is right. We’re trying to make that happen. We’re going to be talking almost everyday.”

Later Wainwright said about the contract negotiation on his potential extension with the team with he has played almost seven seasons, “We are trying to get some movement. Both sides are on friendly terms. Both sides are working toward a deal.”

Cardinals’ management knows that Wainwright is highly talented player and if he stays more years in the club, they will certainly get benefit from his extraordinary pitching talent.

Last year, when the Cardinals were struggling in the second half of the season, Wainwright was the only player who stood tall against all opponent hitters and showed his true offensive class leading his team into 2012 Major League Baseball post season.

His individual stats were also consistent at 3.94 ERA along with 14-13 win loss, 184 strikeouts and 1.25 WHIP. On the other hand, not just in the past season, but his overall career numbers also place him among top pitchers in Major League as he currently carries career 3.15 ERA along with 80-48 win-loss, 908 strikeouts and 1.21 WHIP.
