A court in Quetta on Friday handed down a two-year sentence to Balochistan former minister Ali Madad Jatak over fake degree.

The Additional Sessions Judge also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 in the case.

Jatak was taken into custody by the police and shifted to jail as soon as he came out of the court.

His supporters chanted slogans in his favour and he told the media that he will appeal in the high court.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan High Court, cancelled a lower court’s decision against former Federal Minister Humayun Aziz Kurd, who was sentenced to one year in prison and Rs 5,000 fine in the fake degree case two days ago.

The Balochistan High Court city bench set aside the session court verdict against Hamayun Kurd, who had had challenged the guilty verdict.

Kurd who won the 2008 elections from NA-267 was sentenced in the court of a Sibi Sessions Judge. Following the sentencing, Kurd was arrested by the police.

Former MNA Jamshed Dasti also appealed in the Multan High Court against the ruling sentencing him to three years in jail over the fake degree case.

The divisional bench announced it will conduct a hearing on April 8 after Advocate Jamshed Hayyat filed an appeal on the former MNA’s behalf.

A day earlier, Dasti was disqualified from elections, slammed with a three year sentence in jail and Rs 5000 penalty by the Muzaffargarh District and Sessions court on account of having a fake degree.

Dasti came out of the court during a break and announced if he was disqualified from contesting the upcoming elections, his brother Javed would take his place.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Dasti said, “I accept the judgment and request my supporters to remain calm.”

Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa MPA and sports minister Syed Aqil Shah also appealed against his one year jail term sentence in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

He was arrested on April 4 after being proven guilty of possessing a fake degree. Judge Shaibar Khan observed Shah had produced two allegedly forged degrees.

The case was prematurely adjourned on Wednesday when Shah’s counsel asked permission to produce a PHC judgment which reportedly states only the unrecognised university should be held responsible for failing to meet the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) criteria for running a university.

The judgment also said the student should not suffer in such a case.
