ECP promises fair polls if security is ensured

Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim on Thursday said that the Election Commission will give the country fair elections if security is ensured.

 

“You provide us improved law and order, we will give you free, fair and transparent elections”, he told a news conference in Islamabad.

 

He said the maintenance of law and order situation was the sole responsibility of the government.

 

The CEC said even the Supreme Court has passed a judgment that without maintaining law and order situation, transparent elections could not be possible.

 

He said that the CEC has made all arrangements to hold free, fair and transparent general elections on May 11.

 

“We have made all arrangements with the coordination of all stakeholders to conduct free, fair and transparent polls.”

 

He said holding of free and fair elections is constitutional obligation of the ECP and, “we are ready to complete the task”. However, he said, law and order situation in the country was not ideal, but the government is committed to improve it for ensuring  free, fair and transparent elections.

 

Meanwhile Secretary Election Commission  Ishtiaq Ahmed has said that all the polling stations should be established in accordance to the Commission’s directives.

 

Talking to media after a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday he explained that provision of security to the contesting candidates‚ political leaders‚ voters and polling staff is the sole responsibility of the provincial and the federal governments.

 

He expressed the hope that all the arrangements regarding the provision of security would be made in accordance to the given plan and earlier meetings in this connection.

 

He said information about the polling stations could be ascertained on mobile phone by SMS on 8300 from Monday morning. He said the polling schemes have been completed throughout the country.

 

The Secretary said that the Election Commission is ready to hold elections‚ and no government would like that elections should not be held. He said despite all difficulties the Election Commission is moving towards the elections.

 

He said all the political parties should also ensure the security of the polling staff and the polling stations.
