President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed grave concern and condemned the kidnapping of the son of former Prime Minister after attack on a political gathering, presidential spokesman said Thursday.

Ali Haider Gillani the son of Yusuf Raza Gilani and candidate from a provincial assembly’s seat in Multan, was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen after they opened fire and killed one person and injured several others.

President Zardari, who also called Yusuf Raza Gillani described the kidnapping of Ali Haider Gillani as a most reprehensible act of a cowardly enemy, Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar said.

He said that the President also called upon the relevant government agencies to get into action to recover the kidnapped Gillani safely and bring the culprits to book.

The President said that the progressive democratic parties had already expressed their serious apprehensions about the militants’ threats and had called upon the Election Commission and the government to take appropriate measures so that the elections were not hijacked by the extremists.

President Zardari said that democratic forces will not be deterred by such cowardly acts and will continue to fight the militants and extremists to the finish and make the ongoing process of democratic transition a success.

The police announced reward for all those who will pass on information about the kidnappers, a police official said.

The police sealed all exit points from Multan and conducted a search operation.

No group claimed responsibility and Gilani family has also not blamed any one for the incident.

The Taliban had threatened to attack the PPP, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP), for what they called the parties ‘secular doctrine’.

Several attacks on these parties have been reported ahead of the elections, which have been claimed by the TTP.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed serious concerns at the kidnapping of Gilani’s son and directed the provincial authorities to step efforts for his recovery, Presidential spokesman said.

The President also spoke to the former Prime Minister via phone and showed his concerns.
