Police fail to recover Gilani’s son in Nowshehra raid

The law enforcement agencies Thursday failed to recover Ali Haider Gilani, son of former Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, in Nowshehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The police had earlier claimed that they have recovered Ali Haider Gilani, in Akora Khattak, who was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen from Multan on May 9.

Gilani family said that the police in Nowshehra had informed them that Ali Haider Gilani was recovered during an operation.

The police later said they have recovered Abdul Wahab who told the police that the younger son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, was being held captive along with him.

District Police Officer Nowshera Waqar Ahmed said that the security agencies launched a major operation on the information in Misri Banda area of Akora Khatak to rescue Ali Haider Gilani.

Another police officer Jahanzeb also confirmed that the operation is underway and that two suspects were arrested during the first raid and recovered Wahab.

Wahab told the police that the captors planned to shift Gilani to North Waziristan later Thursday.

TV channels earlier reported that one captor was killed during the operation.

Ali Haider Gilani was abducted just two days ahead of the general elections. His secretary was killed when he resisted the kidnapping. Several more people were injured.

Gilani family had pointed fingers at political rival Sikandar Bosan, the charge he had denied.

Ali Haider, the youngest son of the former Prime Minister, was candidate for a provincial assembly seat, however, he was defeated. His two brothers also faced defeat.

No group had claimed responsibility for the attack and the police have not yet said anything as to who had kidnapped Ali Haider.
