Unidentified gunmen Friday shot dead a driver of a Nato truck in Khyber tribal region, officials said.

Nearly 70 percent supplies are transported to thousands of NATO troops in Afghanistan via risky Pakistani routes.

NATO trucks are routinely come under attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, both bordering Afghanistan.

Officials said that the gunmen fired at a NATO truck in Shagai area of Khyber Agency on the main route to Afghanistan. Two other people were injured in the attack, they said. They were shifted to a nearby hospital.

The gunmen fled after the incident. No group claimed responsibility. Taliban are blamed for such attacks.

It is the second attack on NATO trucks in the same region in ten days.

On May 16, three truck drivers returning from Afghanistan after unloading Nato supplies were gunned down by unidentified assailants in Jamrud area of Khyber Agency and the nearby Peshawar district.

NATO is also using Pakistan routes for withdrawing its heavy machinery and defence equipment and dozens of trucks daily enter Pakistan to proceed to Karachi port.

The US and its NATO allies plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan by 2014, however, the US plans to keep several thousand troops in the war-torn country beyond 2014.
