Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday expressed his desire to see better relations with Pakistan, particularly in economics, trade and tourism.

The premier made the remarks during a meeting with newly- designated ambassador of Pakistan to Cambodia Amjad Ali Sher at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Xinhua reported.

He said the two countries signed an agreement on the investment protection and promotion in April 2004 during the visit of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to Cambodia.

Cambodia wanted to see investments from Pakistan, he said, urging the ambassador to help attract Pakistani investors to Cambodia.

The ambassador said that Pakistan saw Cambodia as an important country in Asia and would try to bolster bilateral ties in all fields, particularly in politics, trade, investment and tourism.

In April 2004 Pakistan and Cambodia agreed to promote and develop multi-lateral relations for stability, peace and security in South Asia, Southeast Asia and in the broader sense to the whole of Asia Pacific region.

There have been pledges made by the Pakistani government of training numerous Cambodian students for getting training in various Civil Aviation and defence forces institutions in Pakistan.

Former Prime Minister Jamali had also signed agreements on fighting terrorism and boosting investment during his visit. The two countries had also signed a memorandum of understanding on protection of investment and cooperation in fighting terrorism.

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to allow Pakistan to join the 23-member group in June last year at a meeting in Cambodia, but the move was blocked by India, which raised a procedural issue.
