PPP calls for treason trial from October 1999

Senator Farhatullah Babar Friday said that the PPP supports the trial under Article 6 of the Constitution of not only General Mushaarf but also of his accomplices and collaborators from the time he sent packing a democratic government unconstitutionally on October 12, 1999 and not merely from November 3, 2007 when the dictator imposed emergency.

He said that if we have to protect and defend democracy and Constitution which we must then we must bring to justice those who dismissed an elected government, imprisoned the Prime Minister and subverted the Constitution alongwith their collaborators.

He was speaking at a function organized by the PPP youth wing in Hyderabad on the eve of Black Day to denounce Zia’s military take over in 1977.

Spokesperson to President said that if subversion and abrogation of the Constitution was not punished now it will set up a dangerous precedent that would embolden future dictators to do whatever they pleased.

He asked the political forces to join hands to defeat the creation of dictatorship namely the militants and the extremists who were the worst enemies of democracy and had threatened the federation and our way of life and wished to impose their political ideology through brute force.

He said that some people now advocated talks with the militants Senator Farhatullah Babar said that by June 2013 Pakistan had signed 13 peace deals and 9 military operations with the sole objective of expelling or registering the foreign militants and stopping the use of our territory for operation against other countries.

In return while we gave amnesty to the militants they never kept their side of the bargain and we unwittingly gave time to the militants to regroup.

The message of July 5 is that no dictator must go unpunished and  no compromise be made with militants and extremists, he said
