President Karzai accepts invitation to visit Pakistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has accepted invitation to visit Pakistan but stressed that fight against terrorism and peace process should be part of his discussion during his visit, Presidential Palace says.

Pakistan security adviser, Sartaj Aziz, handed over a formal invitation from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to President Karzai to visit Islamabad, late Sunday.

“The President thanked the invitation and in principle accepted the invitation,” said a Pashto-language statement said.

 “However the President insisted that the high level delegation will visit Pakistan after an effective fight against terrorism and peace process are included in agenda of the visit,” the statement said.

They discussed bilateral relations, peace process and effective fight against terrorism, the Presidential palace said.

Nawaz Sharif had invited Mr Karzai to visit Pakistan when he rang him last month; however, the Afghan President had proposed the visit of Pakistani adviser to discuss agenda for his visit to make the trip result-oriented, the Karzai office had stated in a statement then.

The visit was seen an effort to lessen diplomatic tension heightened between the two countries in recent months.

Mr Aziz held talks with Afghan Foreign Minister, Zalami Rasoul and will met Afghan Commerce Minister, Anwar-ul-Haq Ahadi.

The visit of the Pakistani Adviser was the first high-level exchange between the two countries after the assumption of office by the new government following the general elections in May.

Tensions escalated over certain issues, particularly the elusive peace, the opening Taliban office in Qatar and a reported power sharing concept by Pakistan between the Taliban and the Afghan government.
