The newly constituted Council of Common Interests (CCI) holds its first meeting in Islamabad Tuesday to devise new energy policy.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will chair the meeting.

All the four chief ministers and other members of the council will attend.

The participants of the meeting will be taken into confidence on the current power supply and demand situation and government’s plans to overcome the shortage.

The meeting will also discuss recently agreed bailout loan package‚ with the International Monetary Fund.

Sources say the CCI will discuss a six-point agenda that includes briefing on the CCI’s functioning, implementation and execution procedures, deliberation over National Energy Policy for years 2013-18, gas theft control and recovery draft bill, amendment in Petroleum Policy for year 2012, inter-provincial transfer and fiscal discipline, offences and penalties relating to electricity theft and a proposed amendment in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Provinces are likely to take up the non-implementation of the devolution plan in light of the 18th Constitutional Amendment.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Siraj ul Haq says the province will oppose hike in power tariff as the federal gov’t intends to take the decision following the IMF bailout package.
