Imran Khan returns from London, to begin hectic consultations

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan returned home on Thursday from London and will discuss with party leaders the presidential elections and the proposed conference of political parties on national security.

The government had postponed the conference due to the absence of Imran Khan who had gone to the UK for treatment.

Interior Minister, Ch. Niar Ali Khan, says the conference will now be held after Eid.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid says that the conference which was previously scheduled to be held on July 12 was delayed to ensure Imran Khan’s participation.

Imran Khan wants an exclusive meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the army chief, Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Kayani, ahead of the conference.

He said in a statement from London few days back that he wanted a tripartite conference to create a consensus on basic issues before going to discuss the national security issue in the multi party national conference.

The Prime Minister said at a press briefing this week that he is ready to hold a separate meeting with Imran he wishes so.

Imran Khan will be meeting with top party leaders in the coming days to begin consultations on key issues that also include the by-elections.

The important issue for him is the presidential elections which are to be held on July 30. PTI has fielded justice ® Wajihuddin Ahmad.

Ahmed says that the PML-N and PTI can field a joint candidate if the ruling party formally approaches his party.

The PPP is also seeking support for its candidate, Raza Rabbani, and the party leaders are likely to meet Imran Khan. The PPP has already met senior leaders of the opposition parties.

Seats allocations in the next month’s by-election will be a challenge for Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as party local leadership is divided on the nomination of some candidates including the seat he has vacated.

The ANP Haji Ghulam Bilour is again contesting election on the seat he had lost to Imran Khan.

Khan’s PTI is also now included in the list of the parties whose members are accused of holding fake degrees. The Supreme Court has already suspended membership of Ghulam Sarwar Khan, MNA from Taxila. Sarwar had defeated Chaudhry Nisar in the May 11 polls. PTI’s Ayla Malik, who is supposed to contest election on Khan’s vacant seat in Mianwali, also faces charges of holding fake degree.

In Mianwali too, Khan is facing a challenge to nominate such a person to satisfy the local supporters.

Legal battle with MQM is another issue for Khan and PTI as the MQM has already filed a defamation suit of Rs: five billion. The PTI also plans a counter case and he will discuss with party leaders how to proceed with the case.
