Prime Minister seeks World Bank’s investment in power sector

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Wednesday invited the World Bank to invest in Pakistan’s power sector to resolve the energy crisis.  

He was talking to Phillippe le Houerou, Vice President South Asia of the World Bank for South Asia and Country Director, Mr. Richard Benmessaoud, who called on the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.  

He said that Pakistan is currently faced with energy crisis and would welcome the World Bank’s investment in the sector to improve the living conditions of the people.

The Prime Minister appreciated the endeavors the World Bank has made over a period of time for the development and overall progress of Pakistan. He expressed the confidence that the organization would continue extending its support for the development projects in the country.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Pakistan greatly values its relations with Nepal which are based on mutual respect and shared perceptions on regional and international issues.

He expressed these views in a meeting with a Nepalese delegation, headed by Mr. Shanker Prasad Koirala, Minister for Finance, Industry, Commerce and Supplies, which called on him at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Prime Minister expressed the hope that the Joint Economic Commission’s meeting, for which the Napalese delegation visiting the country, would help to increase the trade gains and harness the economic potential between the two countries and also reiterated Pakistan’s continued financial and technical assistance for economic development in Nepal.

Mr Sharif said that the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both sides can play an effective role in enhancing trade relations between the two countries.

He expressed the hope that the two countries would make progress on the modalities of a ‘Free Trade Agreement’, with the conclusion of which, trade and economic relations would expand considerably.

The Prime Minister also expressed the confidence that the Nepalese Government will soon finalize the outstanding MOUs in the areas of Extradition, Air Services, trade, mutual legal assistance, drugs trafficking and education.

He said Pakistan will continue to offer scholarships in medicine and engineering to the bright Nepalese students.
