Taliban release female Afghan MP in prisoners’ exchange

The Afghan Taliban have released Fariba Ahmadi Kakar, the member of parliament from Kandahar Province, in exchange for six of their prisoners. 

Kakar was abducted in eastern province of Ghazni last month.

Zabihullah Mujahed, the Taliban spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday that the Taliban in Ghazni Province handed over Fariba Ahmadi to her family following the exchange of prisoners.  

He added: “Fariba Ahmadi has been swapped with four women and two children who had been detained by the Kabul government on charges of being relatives of the Mujahideen.”

Mojahed said: “Fariba Ahmadi was exchanged with those female relatives of the mojahedin who had been tortured in dark prisons of the Kabul government over the past years. Before the decision of judges, the Kabul government sentenced them to 20 years imprisonment.”

The Taliban spokesman considered the exchange of Fariba Ahmadi with their prisoners as a major victory. Mujahed said that the Taliban captured Fariba Ahmadi in an attempt to free the children and female relatives of the Mujahedin who had been held in custody. Mujahed said that the Taliban had treated Fariba Ahmadi according to Islamic and humanitarian principles during her time in custody and handed over her to her family with all due respect.

Government officials have not yet commented on the issue. However Fariba family has confirmed her release. 

The Taliban captured Fariba Ahmadi Kakar, the representative of the people of southern Kandahar Province in the Wolasi Jerga, the lower house of Afghan parliament, along with some members of her family on Kabul-Kandahar highway in Ghazni Province on 10 August.
