Nawaz Sharif seeks support to curb terrorism, meet other challenges

Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, Monday told a conference of the country’s major political and religious leaders that a national consensus is needed to find out solution to the issue of terrorism and other major challenges.

The Prime Minister had invited the country’s political and religious leaders to seek their proposals for a national security policy that will also include the option to hold talks with the Taliban militants.

In his opening remarks, Nawaz Sharif, said priority should be given to dialogue with the Taliban to end bloodshed as terrorism has claimed over 40,000 lives.

“Our problems are getting more worst due to terrorism,” Nawaz Sharif told the All Parties Conference, aired live by the state television.

“The most important matter is our national security and my government will not do politics on the issue of terrorism, security and other national issues,” he said.

He urged the political leadership to join hands to overcome three major challenges being faced by the country including terrorism‚ economy and energy crisis.

“We also have to devise a joint strategy to tackle these issues and should support each other to steer the country and nation out of these challenges,” Nawaz Sharif said and warned that Pakistan will suffer greatly if we remained divided on the issue of terrorism.

The prime minister expressed gratitude to the political leadership for attending the all parties conference and hoped that a national consensus will emerge as a result of this conference which will also increase confidence of the nation on democracy.

He assured the nation that the government with the help of all political forces will tackle all issues on war footing basis and hoped Pakistan will enter into a new era of development and prosperity with joint efforts of political leadership.

Nawaz Sharif said peace is vital for not only economic revival of the country but also a peaceful transition through democratic way.

Head of the country’s superior intelligence agency, ISI, Lt. Gen. Zaheeer-ul-Islam briefed the conference on the overall security situation and responded to questions from the participants. The briefing was held without allowing cameras.

The Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani also attended the meeting.

He assured the nation that the government with the help of all political forces will tackle all issues on war footing basis and hoped Pakistan will enter into a new era of development and prosperity with joint efforts of political leadership.

The leaders attending the moot include Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Shah‚ Makhdoom Amin Fahim‚ Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain‚ Imran Khan‚ Pir Pagara‚ Haji Adeel‚ Dr Farooq Sattar‚ Liaquat Baloch‚ Akhtar Mengal‚ Mahmoud Khan Achakzai‚ Raja Zafarul Haq‚ Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao‚ Maulana Fazlur Rehman‚ Mir Hasil Bazenjo‚ Ghazi Gulab Jamal‚ Abbass Khan‚ Professor Sajid Mir Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhawa‚ all the four chief ministers and federal ministers for Interior‚ Information and Finance.

Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan says the conference will come up with a consensus resolution at the end of the conference which will give a roadmap to the Government as to how it should move forward to overcome terrorism and establish peace in the country.

The conference will discuss the possibility of talks with the Taliban and the government wants to get backing for the move.
