Governor Sindh province, Ihshrat-ul-Ebad has resigned apparently over operation by security forces in the port city of Karachi, sources and the local media reported Saturday.

Governor Ebad’s party the Mutahida Qaumi Movement or MQM has protested against the operation and alleged that its nearly 100 activists have been arrested.

There is no official word on governor’s resignation however sources in the governor house say that Ebad has faxed his resignation to the Presidency.

Resignation rumours gripped the country after the sudden departure of Ebad to Dubai late Friday.

Section of the media has reported that Ebad will stay in Dubai for a couple of days and will later proceed to London to meet the MQM’s self-exiled chief Altaf Hussain.

The federal government with consultation of the provincial government has given a go ahead for operation against terror groups, kidnappers, extortionists and criminal gangs as violence has claimed many lives and affected business activities.

The operation caused tension between the MQM and the government after the police arrested a former lawmaker of the group in connection with the killing of two police men.

The MQM said that its supporters are the main target of the operation launched by the paramilitary troops with the support of the police force.

Sources said Ebad had told his close aide that he was not performing his role as Governor and was not being informed about the operation.

Rangers have conducted several raids in the city and have arrested suspected criminals, including members of MQM, during their raids.

A police spokesperson claimed that 152 suspects were rounded up in 129 raids in different areas of the city. “The police also recovered 49 firearms and five bombs,” he had added.
