Uninterrupted power supply gov’t top priority: minister

Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif said provision of cheap and uninterrupted electricity to the consumers is the top priority of the government.

Chairing a meeting in Islamabad on Monday‚ he said the energy crisis has adversely affected the economy and now all out efforts are being made to bridge the demand and supply gap.

He said CASA-1000 (Central Asia-South Asia Regional Energy and Trade) project will cost one billion rupees.

Earlier‚ talking to reporters in Sialkot‚ the Minister for Water and Power said that the government is focusing on overcoming energy crisis on priority basis.

He said utmost efforts are being made to complete power generation projects at the earliest.

Referring to drive against electricity and gas pilferage‚ he said it would be further accelerated across the country.

The Minister said impact of this drive against the electricity and gas theft would help increase the revenue of WAPDA and Sui Gas considerably.

Khawaja Asif said under the drive‚ special steps are being taken to unearth the employees of WAPDA and Sui gas involved in this malpractice. He said the government would take stern action against the persons involved in mal-practice and causing loss to national exchequer just for their personal gains.

He said a large number of tampered electricity and gas meters were detected during the drive and several members of mafia were arrested.
