Pakistan says at UN drone strikes infringe sovereignty

Pakistan has called at the United Nations for immediate halt to the U.S. drone strikes on its soil through urgent and intense dialogue.

Speaking during a UN Security Council debate on the situation in Afghanistan‚ Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Masood Khan said drone strikes infringe the country’s sovereignty‚ violate international law and cause civilian casualties.

The American spy aircraft routinely fire missiles into the tribal regions that Pakistan says kill civilians and complicate the war on the al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Pakistani envoy said drone strikes are also detrimental to the combined efforts to fight terrorism.

He  noted that UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon during his recent visit to Pakistan had also pointed out the adverse consequences of the use of armed drones.

He said the All Parties Conference in Islamabad had also recommended raising of the drone issue at the United Nations.

Ambassador Masood Khan said Pakistan is facilitating the Afghan reconciliation process‚ but progress is attainable only if all stakeholders share the goals of the peace process.

He assured the government and the people of Afghanistan of Pakistan’s continued commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.

The drone issue was raised prior to the visit to New York of Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, who will visit New York from Sept.23 to 29 to lead Pakistan’s delegation to attend General Assembly Session of the United Nations.

The Prime Minister will address the General Assembly session on September 27 to highlight Pakistan’s foreign policy guide lines,its point of view on various regional and international issues besides domestic priorities, said the Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry says. 

The spokesman said the Prime Minister in his address to the General Assembly will also dilate on the efforts of the present government to curb the menace of terrorism besides its endeavor to bring stability to the region.
