Speaking at the High-level meeting of the UN Security Council, Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sartaj Aziz, has called for an end to the use of drone strikes.

The Adviser reiterated Pakistan’s stance that drone strikes violated international law, including international humanitarian law, and were also detrimental to collective efforts to fight terrorism.

He agreed with the UN Secretary General’s observation in his report that drone strikes result in child casualties and have had a serious impact on their psycho-social health, the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad said.

Mr. Sartaj Aziz drew attention to casualties of civilians, including women and children, inflicted by armed drones in Pakistan.

The Security Council meeting was convened by Australia to discuss the issue of small arms and light weapons. The Council adopted a resolution seeking to reinforce measures to prevent illicit transfers, accumulation and misuse of those weapons.

Mr. Sartaj Aziz underscored the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach in addressing issues related to small arms and light weapons, stressing that greater attention was required to deal with the demand side of those arms.

He called for a more active role of the Security Council in resolution of outstanding disputes. The Adviser also highlighted the steps taken by Pakistan to regulate the sale, supply, import and transfer of small arms.
