5.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Iran

It was reported from Tehran that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on the Gulf Coast near Iran’s only nuclear power plant left 7 dead and injured 40 people on Thursday. Emergency response chief, Hassan Qadami was the one who came out in the open and revealed this information to the world.

While talking to the IRNA news agency, Qadami stated:

“So far, there are seven dead and 30 injured receiving hospital treatment.”

It is also reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was close to Borazjan, within the vicinity of 60 kilometres from Bushehr and this is exactly where Iran has built the Russian-built reactor.

Iran is currently standing on several seismic fault lines. An earthquake jolted the country back in 2003 as well and it was near the Southern City of Bam. That earthquake killed 26000 people and also destroyed the ancient citadel built out of mud.

The Arabic neighbours of the country have always raised concerns regarding the reliability of the nuclear plant as they claim that there could be a radioactive leak if a major earthquake strikes the area.

Since the UN nuclear watchdog has the plan under its supervision, Iran and Russia are of the opinion that it respects the international standards.
