Musharraf Trial for Treason

General (retd) and the former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, who was to appear before a special court today, January 1, 2014, for his treason case hearing, remained absent and his counsels asked for a five-week adjournment of the hearing.

Musharraf had earlier made it clear that he was not decided upon whether he will appear before the special court or not. Last week, at the day of his hearing, explosive material was recovered from the route he was supposed to take to court. This led to postponement of the hearing, and later on explosives were also recovered from the vicinity of his Chak Shehzad residence.

According to the former President, the treason charges against him are an act of vendetta carried out by the present government, which the military general had ousted in a coup back in 1999.

His counsels, who appeared before the court, filed a petition related to lack of security arrangements for their client and sought adjournment on security grounds.

Moreover, Musharraf’s lawyers argue that the actions he took on November 3 were in his capacity as Army Chief, which means those actions don’t fall under the jurisdiction of the special court set up to hear the case.
