While winter vacations for most educational institutes finished on January 1st, 2014, the Federal government announced that all schools, colleges and universities will be closed till January 11 due to the severe cold wave gripping the country.

The announcement was made by Tahir Rafiq, the spokesman for the Ministry of Federal Affairs. Recently the temperature in Islamabad dropped to as low as minus 3 degrees, which forced people to remain insides.

Moreover, the power and gas crisis in the country also exacerbates the severity of this weather as people are left to fend the cold without heaters and electricity due to frequent loadshedding.

The current cold wave is, according to the meterological department, the coldest of the season and many areas of Pakistan, especially the upper areas like Gilgit and Azad Kashmir had road blocks due to snowfall.

Even Punjab was not free from the effects of this winter, where temperatures dropped in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore. Cities like Sialkot and Jhang also experienced rainfall along with the harsh cold, which disrupted normal life.

The tourist destinations in the north, like Kalam, Malam Jabba, Shangla and Chitral also received a lot of snowfall, all of which accumulated and blocked link roads. People were held hostage due to the harsh weather conditions and normal routines were disrupted.
