On the morning of Good Friday, April 18, 2014, perhaps one of the quietest days of the year, an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in Técpan de Galeana (Guerrero, southwest of Mexico) shook the nation’s capital. The Mexican Seismological coded it as 7 magnitude quake, while the U.S. Geological Survey estimated it at 7.5.

Mexico City, build over the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital founded on Lake Texcoco, is in an intense seísmica area. The residents (or chilangos) are accustomed to the usual seísmicas alerts, but rarely with this intensity. The earthquake this morning was a reminiscent of 2012, when a 7.7 shook the city. And every time shaking (strong) in the DF back memories of the devastating earthquake of September 19, 1985, a catastrophe of 8.1 that left at least 10,000 dead, according to official figures.

Some areas of Mexico City have been without power and the noise of the helicopters that fly overhead interrupts the usual silence of a festive day. The protocol is known to any capital: at the time the alert sounds, you must orderly go outside.

Coordinator of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Interior, Luis Felipe Puente said on Twitter that no damage is reported and neither a tsunami alert is issued.
