Over 50% of Pakistanis Earn Less Than $60 Monthly – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired the meeting of Economic Advisory Council (EAC) to discuss the overall situation of national economy on Saturday April 26, 2014 in Islamabad. EAC made some new decisions and considered proposals regarding the salaries of the employees in the government sector.

The Economic Advisory Council concluded that more than 50% of the Pakistanis were living below the poverty line.

The Council defined the new criteria for an individual living in Pakistan to be considered as poor. The new income threshold was decided to be PKR200 per day. Any Pakistani who earns less than PKR200 daily will be considered poor. More than half of the country’s population has income that is less than PKR6000 (USD60) per month.

The Council members also considered proposal to increase the salaries of the government employees. However, the final decision will be taken during this year’s fiscal budget.
