New Egypt President Al Sisi Celebrates “Democratic Transition”

Almost a year after having executed a coup against Islamist Mohamed Morsi raïs, the former Minister of Defence, the Sisi Abdelfattah sworn in as president of Egypt in a ceremony that took place on Sunday morning in the Constitutional Court. In his first words as president, Al Sisi welcomed the “democratic and peaceful transition ” that has brought him to power, as quoted by Al Arabiya. The day, declared a holiday by the Egyptian government, will feature various acts of official celebration to be attended by the country’s authorities and the foreign dignitaries who came for the occasion, as well as other more popular and informal tone.

“I swear to God save loyalty to the regime of the Republic, to respect the Constitution and the law, protect the interests of the people as a whole and to preserve the independence of the country, its unity and integrity of its territory,” read the Sisi in investiture ceremony. Beside, Adly Mansur, interim president of the country was during the transition and that from now revert to his position of Chairman of the Constitutional Court. This is the first time in the history of Egypt that a ceremony of formal transfer of power from one president to his successor occurs.

Al Sisi, 59, wore a dark suit and dark blue tie. The raïs brand, which swept the presidential elections late last May with over 93 % of the vote, the military uniform hung in March, shortly after announcing his intention to participate in the elections. According to the law of the country, the official should be removed from the Armed Forces before holding a political charge.

Sisi followers to celebrate his inauguration in Tahrir Square, the symbol of the revolution of 2011 that toppled former dictator Hosni Mubarak. In recent months, protests by supporters of Islamist brotherhood have been losing steam as the police and law enforcement, a wave of violence that has undermined the legitimacy of the elections intensified. Just few hours before the inauguration, a court sentenced the death penalty to ten people, members or supporters of the Brotherhood, on charges of incitement to violence and the court of public roads in an illegal demonstration, among other. An estimated 1,400 people have died in the protests against the overthrow of Morsi.
