In a reflection of the concern in the U.S. administration to the increasing flow of undocumented children who are entering the country, the White House announced Sunday that Vice President Joe Biden, lengthen his trip to Latin America by one day to deal with governments of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras crisis by the massive influx of immigrant children.

As part of the tour which starts on Monday in Brazil, which will also take him to Colombia and the Dominican Republic, the Vice President will travel to Guatemala on Friday to hold a joint meeting with the country’s president, Otto Perez Molina, of El Salvador, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, and the general coordinator of the Government of Honduras, Jorge Ramón Hernández Alcerro. Three quarters of the children who come to the U.S. come from the three Central American countries.

Biden manifest Molina, Ceren and Alcerro that the influx of children is a “major issue” for Washington and will declare to humanitarian efforts to “support ” these countries to “discourag ” travel and try to solve the “roots ” violence and socioeconomic disparities that underlie this problem, explained on Sunday, without elaborating, a senior administration in a conference call with reporters.

At the same time, the vice president will leave very clear that, like other undocumented immigrants, these children are subject to deportation, as Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson said yesterday. In this sense, the goal of Biden, as stated on Sunday will combat the “misunderstandings” that these children receive some kind of “special treatment” in the area of residence. “Not worth it, no light at the end of the tunnel [ for these children at a residence in the U.S. ],” he said. ” Illegal immigration is not safe, put your child in the hands of a criminal organization is not safe.”

The number of children intercepted while crossing the border alone between the U.S. and Mexico has been growing at a steady rate in recent years, but in recent months has soared. As in fiscal year 2013 (October 2012 to September 2013) was gathered 24,493 children under 18 who crossed border without relatives or guardians  between October 2013 and May 31, 2014 the figure almost doubled (47,017) and no doubt will continue to grow until September. Official figures estimate that the number could exceed hitherto 60,000. A study by the Pew Hispanic submitted this week even talk of 90,000 undocumented children alone.

Aware of this reality, the White House announced that, regardless of short-term actions, Biden also addressed in Guatemala quote other long-term ” to enhance development in all countries of Central America.” In this sense, the high office of the Administration stressed that the purpose was already evident in the trip  U.S. President Barack Obama made in May 2013 to Costa Rica.
