The FIFA Disciplinary Committee on Thursday punished Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, 27, with nine international matches and the ban on all football-related activity for four months. Luis Suarez bit defender Chiellini during the match between Italy and Uruguay last Tuesday. FIFA found him guilty of violating Article 48 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (assault on another player) and 57 (sportsmanship offense against another player), the exemplary punishment will apply from knockout match, Saturday, between Colombia and Uruguay.

The rest of the punishment will be applied during the Uruguay fixtures at the World Cup if the Uruguayan team continues to advance in the tournament, or at their next official matches. “Such behavior can not be tolerated when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars playing in the field,” said the chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser Swiss.

According to Article 22 of the FIFA Code, Uruguayan Liverpool striker shall not engage in any activities related to football (whether administrative, sports or any other) or enter any stage during the period of prohibition.

The player may not enter the precincts of the stadium in which the Uruguayan team is playing a game while serving with the nine -game suspension. Finally, FIFA imposed a fine of 82,250 euros.

The decision was communicated to the player and the Football Association and created an extraordinary body of reactions in Uruguay and in the world, divided between applause for disqualification and surprise at a punishment considered excessive by many. FIFA said that the decision is not final and can be appealed, but immediately clarified that any appeal to the extent not suspend the implementation of the same, which in practical terms means the departure of the world top-rated striker.

This is the third time that the Uruguayan striker is penalized for a similar act. In 2010 he was sentenced to seven games in the Eredivisie punishment for biting the front Otman Bakkal, and last year another ten, and in the Premier League, when did the same with the Serbian defender Chelsea Branislav Ivanovic. Suarez, however, was chosen best player in the Premier League this season by Professional Footballers’ Association and the Journalists Association Football in England. FIFA stated that his punishment does not include a requirement that the player follow a psychological treatment to learn to control those impulses.
