asylum seekers rate in EU increased

The European Union in 2013 received a record number of applications for asylum: 435,760. The figure represents an increase of 30 % over the previous year, the highest growth seen so far on Community statistics, which is collected uniformly since 2008. Syrian crisis, but also underground conflicts such as Chechnya in Russia, explained in large extent this increase. Syria, with 12% of applications, and Russia with 10%, have become countries with more applicants, according to data presented today by the European Commission.

European Union has become one of the most favorable territory for direct or indirect victims of conflicts, although only granted refugee status to 34% of those who request it. “Not even half of the Member States fulfill their obligations in asylum matters,” lamented Monday the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, on the presentation of the figures of the European Asylum Support Office. The Swedish Malmström, whose country heads, with Germany and France, the preferences of refugees because their states offer the most advantageous systems, called for more efforts to other partners and requested legal channels open to prevent shipwrecks. ” People opt for boats to reach Europe because there are very few legal channels, if any, to get ” argued Malmström, a speech generating multiple resistances among European rulers.

The war in Syria has more than doubled the number of asylum applications from that country to over 50,000. Sweden received a third of the claims. Faced with the evidence of this conflict, a similar number of Russian citizens called Euro doors, mainly from Germany (37%). Most explain community experts, comes Chechen separatist region that has lost two wars for independence against Moscow. Beyond the political unrest line, two factors explain the sharp rebound in 2013: improving the benefits provided to refugees in Germany and an extended lobe between the Chechen community of Berlin granted a tract of land and a sum of money anyone who requests asylum on its territory.

After the peak of 2013, the numbers have eased much at the start of 2014, explained the director of the European office seekers, Robert Visser. The most significant trend in the first five months of the year is recorded among Ukrainians. From March to May there were over 2,000 claims for international protection, a rise that is likely to continue throughout the year.

Also by geographic proximity, and looking for a better life, citizens of the Balkans recorded a number of applications. If all countries in the region (Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia…) are added, they become the most active group, with 17% of requests. And this despite the fact that the acceptance rate is the lowest, at 3.8 % of the total.

Although it receives a lot of irregular immigration, Spain is on the low side of asylum receiving countries, with 4,485 in 2013, although the increase was a significant 75 % over the previous year.
