Over 40 people were killed Wednesday July 23, 2014 in a TransAsia Airways plane crash attempting an emergency landing in the Penghu Islands of Taiwan during a thunderstorm, according to the Chinese agency Xinhua quoted by Reuters.

Taiwanese media claim that it was a domestic flight. The authorities in the area, according to France Press, stated that 58 passengers with a crew of four were traveling aboard the TransAsia Airways flight. The plane has crashed near the Magong airport in the Penghu Islands in western Taiwan.

Aerial Taiwan authority feared 51 people dead in the crash  and seven are wounded. However, local firefighters lower the casualty toll to 45. Eleven injured persons were shifted to the hospital for medical treatment.

The aircraft is a 70 seats twin-engine ATR-72 that took off at 17:00 from Kaohsiung  airport and crashed two hours later while attempting to land during a thunderstorm, reports Europa Press.
