A bomb blast outside an Imambargah in Rawalpindi late Friday night took the lives of 8 people and injured around 16 others.

According to initial reports, the blast was the result of a suicide attack at the Imambargah which is located Chatian Hatian. At the time of the blast the Imambargah was hosting a congregation in regards to Eid Miladun Nabi (PBUH).

Local police officials spoke to the press and revealed that the bomber may have tried to enter the Imambargah but blew himself when he was not allowed to.

“The nature of explosion is immediately unclear but it may be a suicide attack,” another policeman stated.

The investigation carried out by the Bomb Disposal Squad however points towards a remote detonation instead of a suicide attack.

While no militant group has taken responsibility for the attack, this is the second episode targeting the Shia community after last Sunday’s bomb blast at the Hussaini ground in the Orakzai district.

The attack has once again resulted in criticism over the government’s inability to deal with terrorism. The Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also commented on the gravity of the issue and ordered the IGP Punjab to conduct an investigation into the matter.
