The American President, Barack Obama, kicked off his own Twitter account with the first Tweet saying, “Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account”.

Obama’s Twitter account is accessible at @POTUS, which is the short name for President of the United States of America.

Typically, Obama communicated with people via @WhiteHouse or @BarackObama Twitter accounts, which were managed by his staff and campaigners. Now however, he will be using his own personal Twitter account, which gained more than 100,000 followers in the first half an hour.

According to the White House, @POTUS will only have Tweets from President Obama directly, and while this may be exciting news for Obama’s followers, it also makes his account the top target for hackers.

Former President Bill Clinton also welcomed Obama on Twitter and asked whether the @POTUS handle will stay with the office of the Presidency, to which Obama replied in the affirmative.
