Saudi Arabia Cuts Ties With Tehran!

Monday, January 4th, 2016 10:38:30 by

Saudi Arabia has cut ties with Iran on Sunday the 3rd of January 2016 as a direct response to the attacks and destruction of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran by protesters protesting the state execution of outspoken Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr last week.

The executions have sparked a deepening rift between Sunni and Shia Muslims and between Saudi Arabia and Iran especially.

The threat of a worsening sectarian divide across the region is real, Bahrain also followed Saudi Arabia in cutting ties with Tehran and the United Arab Emirates has also decided to downgrade its ties with Iran.

Following the executions, a man was shot dead in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, and two Sunni Mosques in Iran’s Hilla Province were bombed.

Accusations have been traded back and forth between the two powers, with Riyadh accusing Tehran of interference and creating terrorist cells in Saudi Arabia’s Shiate majority while officials in Tehran blamed Saudi Arabia for using the attack on its Embassy as any convenient way to cause further sectarian divide in the region for their own purposes.

The effect of these tensions in the Middle East has been a sharp increase in oil prices. Officials from China said they are highly worried about recent events, the United States and Germany, have called for both sides to deescalate the situation while Russia has even offered to mediate between the two.

There are also fears that these tensions will make it more difficult to get a peace deal in Syria as Tehran and Saudi Arabia are already involved in a proxy war in Syria, with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab powers supporting militants seeking to overthrow Basar al- Asad who is being backed by Iran.

Shia’s unified in condemnation around the world, have warned Saudi Arabia and its royal family of “Divine Revenge”.
