Pakistan Re-assures Saudi Arabia of “Unconditional” Support in the Wake of Diplomatic Row with Iran

Pakistan assured Saudi Arabia of its support during a visit by the Saudi Foreign Minister Dr Adel Al-Jubeir to discuss the ongoing diplomatic standoff between Saudi Arabia and Iran over the execution of prominent Shiate cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir Al-Nimr.

Saudi intends to build a multinational coalition against terrorism and in this regard PM Sharif assured Saudi Arabia of Pakistan’s unconditional support: The PM said:

 “People of Pakistan hold the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in high esteem and also have deep respect for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. … (they) will always stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Saudi Arabia against any threat to its territorial integrity and sovereignty,”

PM Sharif told FM Jubeir, while assuring him of Pakistan’s unconditional support.

 The two also discussed other issues affecting the world and promoting bilateral relations.

Mr. Jubeir also paid a visit to Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif and he also paid a visit to Sartaj Aziz Foreign Affairs Adviser to the PM.

His six hr working visit was slightly extended at the last minute due to the attacks on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran. A joint press conference with Mr. Aziz and Mr Jubeir was was cancelled.

Saudi Arabia announced plans to build a 34-nation coalition to fight terrorism, it was confirmed that Pakistan is a member of the group but it is still in the early stages of its formation and more details will be shared once Riyadh concluded its plans for the group.

The two sides also agreed to engage the clergy as part of anti-terrorism efforts.
