A timed bomb exploded in a bus containing government workers in Peshawar on Wednesday, resulting in the death of 15 people and leading to 25 injured victims.

The blast occurred near Peshawar’s Sunehri Masjid and was aimed at the Civil Secretariat bus carrying government workers from Mardan en route to the provincial capital.

The Lady Reading Hospital was so preoccupied with injured victims that an emergency had to be declared. The area around the explosion was fenced off as terror and fright spread among residents.

The bomb was planted in the rear of the bus according to Catonment Muhammad Kashif, the Superintendent of Police (SP).

“Fifteen people were killed and 25 others were severely injured,” added the police officer.

The bus was headed for Malakand from Peshawar and had picked up government employees on its way said Mubarak Zeb of the Capital City Police (CCP). According to him, Levis personnel provide security in the area.

He compared Malakand to Mohmand and Bajaur Agency, describing them as sensitive areas.

The explosives were graded as weighing eight kilograms by the Bomb Disposal Unit.

Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak told DawnNews through Mushtaq Ghani how much he detests the blast and issued directions to ensure the wounded have proper medical care.

Ghani further said that the bus was privately-operated and there was no way for the government to ensure the security of the private vehicles, adding that it was the duty of the contractor. Normally the bus is given one last check before leaving the station.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that a civil secretariat bus has been targeted. 2012 and 2013 witnessed the killing of 38 people.

The city of Peshawar has encountered numerous attacks on civilians and is also home to the XI Corps which is an administrative corp of the Pakistan Army responsible for managing military activity in KP. It is presently engaged in full-blown operation in North Waziristan.

PM & PTI Chairman Denounce The Blast

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemns the attack and expressed his grief over the lives lost.

Also, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan denounced the blasts and expressed measures to provide the best medical care for the injured victims.

Recent Attacks

The attacks came after there was a suggestion for the army to end the military situation in North Waziristan’s Shallow valley.

There have been several assaults in the country since the commencement of the year, despite the 20-point National Action Plan (NAP) to fight terrorism.

The province of KP has witnessed an APS-styled attack on Charsadda’s Bacha Khan University in January, which was masterminded by those behind the tragic December 2014 massacre.

From that time till date, security forces have been the target of several attacks.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group Jamatul Ahrar was responsible for the hit in the Charsadda’s Shabqadar area. They admitted to the attack justifying it with the hanging of Mumtaz Qadri, the killer of Salman Taseer, the Punjab Governor.

Official reports have, on the other hand, carried out thousands of intelligence-based operations and numerous militants have been captured and eliminated via the NAP.
