Asad Shah, An Ahmadi Shopkeeper, Killed For Disrespecting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

A Pakistani man residing in Glasgow, Scotland, accused of murdering an Ahmadi shopkeeper released a statement on Wednesday claiming that he assaulted Asad Shah because of his disrespect of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The victim, Shah, aged 40 was discovered outside his store last month with grievous injuries and had later been pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Religiously prejudiced” was how the police described it.

Shah had moved Glasgow from Pakistan in 1998 and had posted a message on Facebook wishing people a ‘Happy Easter’, “especially to my beloved Christian nation”.

The alleged murderer, Tanveer Ahmed, aged 32, residing in Bradford in northern England, was brought in front of a preliminary court hearing on Wednesday and had later issued a statement through his lawyer, claiming his guilt.

“Asad Shah disrespected the messenger of Islam the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Mr Shah claimed to be a Prophet,” the statement said.

“If I had not done this others would and there would have been more killing and violence in the world.

“I wish to make it clear that the incident was nothing at all to do with Christianity or any other religious beliefs — even although I am a follower of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him I also love and respect Jesus Christ.”

Ahmed, who is still under custody, is still expected to go through a legal process. His next court hearing has not yet been set.

Ahmadis are a discriminated minority and are considered as non-Muslims by many, which is the major reason for their dwelling in western countries.

Pakistan, however, has a worse case of Ahmadi intolerance, with so many Ahmadis under attack for reading the Holy Quran, holding celebrations and for having Quranic verses on rings or wedding cards.

Numerous Ahmadis relocated from Pakistan since 1974, which was the same time that the country declared itself non-Muslim. Its vulnerability heightened in 1984 when Pakistani laws were passed banning them from saying or performing any acts associated with Islam.
