Deadly encounter with dacoits leaves ten policemen dead, 25 taken hostage

An operation against dacoits on Wednesday left ten policemen dead, several injured and 25 others taken hostage. The operation termed Zarb-e-Aahan was carried out against a notorious gang called Chotu gang. The gang is led by a criminal by the name of Ghulam Rasool, whose alias is Chotu.

According to the details of this deadly encounter, 42 policemen took part in the operation and advanced on the criminals’ hideout. However, the operation was ill-planned due to which the policemen were intercepted and exchange of fire took place between both the parties. As a result, SHO Hanif Ghauri, Head Constable Ajmal, constables Tanvir Ubaidullah, Amanullah and Zabihullah were killed amongst others. The injured officers were taken to the Sheikj Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, while the ones who were taken hostage are still in the gang’s control.

It has also been learnt that five dacoits were killed during the exchange of fire, while fifteen others have been injured. Unfortunately the injured criminals also escaped. The operation was immediately aborted while additions contingents of police and Rangers have been called in. Army helicopters have also been demanded for the operation and an ultimatum has been given to the dacoits to surrender, or else face the repercussions.

A 30 kilometer stretch of island-like area in the riverine area of Rajanpur’s Rojhan tehsil has been under the control of Chotu gang since long. Till date, five operations have been launched against the criminals in this area, but all these operations have failed.
